International Health Insurance
As an international student, it is important to have health insurance during your studies in Canada. We’re pleased to let you know that your health coverage is provided through StudyInsured, a trusted provider specializing in insurance for international students.
In an effort to be fully transparent, we would like to highlight an important change taking place for the coming school year. Please note that beginning August 2025, all international students at Olds College will be enrolled into the Essential Plan offered by StudyInsured™. This plan will replace the coverage that students previously held with Guard.Me.
What you need to know about your coverage:
Comprehensive Protection: Your StudyInsured plan covers emergency medical care, doctor visits, prescriptions, and other unexpected illnesses or injuries.
Automatic Enrollment: You are automatically enrolled as long as you are registered as a student. To complete your enrollment, Olds College will share your name, sex, date of birth, program dates, student ID, Olds College email, and nationality with StudyInsured.
Coverage Period: Your insurance remains active during scheduled breaks (such as spring or summer), even if you’re not attending classes. Your insurance will be active for 365 days and will commence approximately two weeks prior to the start of your first course.
Health Card: You will receive your StudyInsured health card by email at least one week before the start of classes.
How StudyInsured Works with Other Coverage
StudyInsured is designed to complement other available health coverage providing access to medical care. If you are eligible for the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP), it will provide free coverage for basic medical services such as hospital and physician care. In addition, many students are automatically enrolled in the Olds College Student Association Benefits Plan through MyStudentPlan.ca, which provides extended health and dental coverage (such as vision care, dental services, mental health supports, and prescription drugs). These plans work together to ensure you are fully covered for both basic and extended health needs.

Here are some important notes:
Students who meet the eligibility requirements (12 month study permit as indicated via Alberta Health Services) for the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) MUST register with the province directly. Instructions for how to register for the provincial health care plan are available here.
Once registered with the provincial program, StudyInsured™ will be second payor to the provincial plan for eligible claims.
StudyInsured™ provides insurance benefits that the provincial coverage does not include emergency prescription medication, coverage for trips outside of Canada, repatriation to the home country in the event of serious illness, injury, or death, Accidental Death & Dismemberment insurance, and more.
If you no longer decide to attend Olds College, your insurance coverage will be cancelled as your eligibility is tied to your student status with the College.
StudyInsured™ Assistance is available 24/7 via telephone or email for any questions about the insurance plan or processes or to coordinate care in the circumstance a student is ill or injured and needs medical attention. Students calling the phone line can be serviced in the language of their choice and will be offered a virtual doctor’s appointment when appropriate.
